Evidence -Based Strategies

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Gradual Release of Responsibility

Effective coaching for teachers relies on evidence-based strategies that are grounded in research and proven to enhance instructional practices, student learning, and professional growth. These strategies include:

  1. Goal Setting & Feedback – Using data-driven objectives and structured feedback to guide teacher development.
  2. Modeling & Demonstration – Showcasing high-leverage instructional techniques to reinforce best practices.
  3. Collaborative Inquiry – Engaging teachers in reflective dialogue and problem-solving based on classroom evidence.
  4. Differentiated Support – Tailoring coaching approaches to individual teacher needs through formative assessment.
  5. Classroom Management & Climate – Cultivating a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment that fosters student success.

By integrating these evidence-based approaches, coaching becomes a powerful tool for sustained teacher improvement and student success.

Effective coaching transforms teaching practices by building confidence, refining skills, and fostering a culture of excellence. When teachers grow, students thrive.

Gradual Release of Responsibility

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Gradual Release of Responsibility

The Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) model is a research-based coaching framework that empowers teachers to develop and refine their instructional practices through structured, scaffolded support. This approach ensures a purposeful shift from coach-led guidance to teacher-led independence, fostering sustainable professional growth.

Key Phases of GRR in Coaching:

  1. "I Do" (Modeling) – The coach demonstrates effective strategies, providing clear examples of best practices in action.
  2. "We Do" (Guided Practice) – The coach and teacher collaboratively plan, implement, and reflect on instruction, with ongoing feedback and adjustments.
  3. "You Do" (Independent Practice) – The teacher applies the strategies with decreasing support, while the coach observes and provides targeted feedback.
  4. "You Do Together" (Collaborative Reflection) – The teacher and coach analyze outcomes, refine practices, and set new goals for continuous improvement.

By implementing the Gradual Release of Responsibility, coaching becomes a dynamic, responsive process that builds teacher confidence, enhances instructional effectiveness, and ultimately improves student learning outcomes.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is the foundation of equitable, data-driven instruction that meets the needs of all learners. As MTSS coaches, we partner with teachers to implement tiered supports with fidelity, ensuring every student receives the right intervention at the right time.

Core Focus Areas of MTSS Coaching:

1. Data-Based Decision Making

  • Supporting teachers in analyzing universal screening (e.g., STAR, DIBELS) and progress monitoring data
  • Co-planning tiered groupings and differentiated instruction

2. Tier 1 (Core) Instruction

  • Strengthening universal design for learning (UDL) in whole-group settings
  • Modeling high-leverage strategies like explicit instruction and scaffolded discourse

3. Targeted (Tier 2) Interventions

  • Co-designing small-group interventions with standardized protocols
  • Ensuring alignment between core curriculum and supplemental supports

4. Intensive (Tier 3) Support Systems

  • Collaborating on individualized skill remediation plans
  • Training staff in specialized interventions (e.g., phonics programs, math fluency drills)

5. Collaborative Problem-Solving

  • Facilitating data meetings to review student response to intervention (RTI)
  • Building teacher capacity to adjust supports in real time

We transform MTSS from a compliance framework into a living system—one where data informs action, equity drives decisions, and every tier of instruction works together to help students thrive.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

English Learner (EL)

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is essential for creating equitable, inclusive, and engaging learning environments where all students feel valued and empowered. As instructional coaches, we play a critical role in supporting teachers to develop the mindsets, knowledge, and skills necessary to implement CRT practices effectively.

Key Principles of Culturally Responsive Teaching Coaching:

  1. Building Cultural Awareness – Helping teachers examine their own biases, understand students' diverse backgrounds, and foster a classroom culture of respect and belonging.
  2. Validating Student Identities – Coaching teachers to integrate students' cultural references, languages, and lived experiences into curriculum and instruction.
  3. Promoting Equity in Pedagogy – Supporting educators in using differentiated, student-centered strategies that address systemic barriers and meet diverse learning needs.
  4. Fostering Critical Consciousness – Guiding teachers to facilitate discussions on social justice, equity, and student agency within the classroom.
  5. Strengthening Family & Community Partnerships – Encouraging collaboration with families and communities to create a more inclusive educational experience.

By embedding culturally responsive practices into coaching, we empower teachers to build classrooms where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Early Childhood

English Learner (EL)

English Learner (EL)

High-quality early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning, social-emotional development, and school readiness. As coaches, we partner with early childhood educators to strengthen their practice through intentional, relationship-based support that aligns with the unique needs of young learners.

Core Focus Areas of Early Childhood Coaching:

  1. Child-Centered, Play-Based Learning – Guiding teachers in designing engaging, developmentally appropriate environments that foster exploration, creativity, and joyful learning.
  2. Social-Emotional Development – Supporting educators in nurturing secure attachments, emotional regulation, and positive peer interactions.
  3. Intentional Teaching Practices – Modeling strategies for scaffolding learning through questioning, open-ended play, and responsive interactions.
  4. Family Engagement & Partnerships – Coaching teachers to build collaborative relationships with families, honoring their cultural perspectives and roles as first teachers.
  5. Observation & Responsive Feedback – Using authentic assessment (e.g., anecdotal records, work samples) to tailor instruction to individual and group needs.

By investing in early childhood coaching, we empower teachers to cultivate nurturing, stimulating, and equitable environments where every young child can thrive.

  • Incorporating students' home languages and lived experiences into instruction

3. Authentic Literacy Development

  • Balancing foundational skills with meaningful reading/writing opportunities
  • Implementing oral language development strategies (Think-Pair-Share, sentence stems)

4. Data-Informed Differentiation

  • Analyzing ACCESS and other data to target specific language domain needs
  • Coaching on flexible grouping and sheltered instruction techniques

5. Family & Community Engagement

  • Building bridges with multilingual families through culturally sensitive communication
  • Facilitating professional learning about EL legal requirements and best practices
